How Competition Builds Skills

Why does a photographer enter competitions?  Is it about awards or recognition?

I can see how somebody might think this at first.  But the truth is that competing in competition directly affects clients.

A journey in competition pushes a photographer to become better at their craft, to keep learning, to grow. The outcome for the client is better images and a better experience with their photographer.

Consistent Skill Development

Competition is a very vulnerable experience for a photographer.  It forces the photographer out of their comfort zone.  Their images are studied in a variety of ways by expert photographic  judges.  Judges examine storytelling, composition, lighting, and overall skills used in creating the images.

A  photographer begins to see details that they may not have noticed on their own.  This results in better client images.  Competition means the photographer is constantly learning and does not become complacent in their craft.

Light and Composition Mastery

Competition holds photographers to very high standards.  This means the photographer becomes better at their lighting and purposeful in their composition,

Competition involves mastery of a variety of photographic elements.  As a result, the photographer increases their overall skills.

Creative Vision

The storytelling aspect of competition encourages creative thinking by the photographer.  This results in more than a random capture, but creates meaningful art pieces.

Growth encourages photographers to see all kinds of possibilities in each session.

Attention to Detail

Nothing is random in competition, every little detail matters – every expression, detail to the background, presentation…

A photographer who participates in competition pays attention to the smallest details during the session and during the retouching process in order to create the best possible images for their clients.

The winner from the photographer’s extensive training is the client.

Excellence

Photographers who participate in competition, who are willing to invest their time, money, and education are committed artists.

These photographers can’t help but become better and carry their dedication into their every day work.

The resulting images are more than snapshots.  They are carefully creating timeless works of photographic art to be treasured for generations.
