How to Choose Your Favorite Photographic Images

Printing your images is one of the best decisions you will make in preserving your memories.

Choosing which photos to print can feel a little difficult and sometimes overwhelming.  After a session, you may have dozens of images you love—and narrowing them down can feel daunting.  The goal of printing isn’t to choose everything; it’s to choose the images that will hold meaning and impact for years to come.

My studio has implemented a system to help you narrow down your favorite images.  Rest assured, together we will find the perfect sizes and products for needs.

Consider How the Images Will Be Used

Before sorting through individual photos, think about how you would like to use them.

  • Wall Art – your timeless memory from that day.  It represents your family, your emotions, the backdrop of a moment captured in time.  These images stand on their own, either independently or in a wall collection.
  • Albums – tell a story through a great variety of images. These are also perfect for representing several different scenes of a moment.
  • Gift prints – are a wonderful way to share memories with those you love.
  • Image Collections  – are a wonderful way to display smaller images with style.

It becomes much easier to select images when you have a designated purpose.

Trust Your First Reactions

When reviewing your gallery, I ask clients not to overthink or concentrate on making any decisions during the initial slideshow.  Some images will immediately draw the eye or make one pause.  Also think about long-term enjoyment.  A winning image often has simple composition, emotion, and timeless appeal.  Your first emotional response is a good measure at how others will respond to your favorite images.

Limit Your Selections

Limiting your images increases the meaning behind each image.

It seems contradictory, doesn’t it?  Shouldn’t more have more meaning?

Limiting your selection helps each image stand on its own and keeps your final collection cohesive.  This is not overwhelming when we work on these together.  I will provide my honest opinion when asked.

My personal recommendations are 1 large wall portrait, 3-5 images for a wall collection, 4 images for an image collection (of course you may want more than one collection), and 20-40 images for an album, depending on the size of the album that is chosen.
