Why AI Cannot Replace a Studio Image

AI is everywhere and it’s here to stay.  So in this world, how does creating portraiture survive?

Portraiture consists of more than just an image, it relies on a human experience.  It’s about more than what you see, as important as this is, it’s also about what you FEEL.

Connection

There is a connection between a photographer and a client that AI simply cannot replicate.  When a person feels heard and seen, there is a natural bond that takes place, a trust.  When trust is felt, facial expressions become more natural and it shows in the final image.

Emotion is Captured During Brief Moments

A photographer anticipates when a brief smile erupts or a timeless expression happens.  A photographer needs to be on their toes and trust their gut during your photographic session.  AI cannot generate emotion.

Every Person is Unique

…Therefore every portrait should be unique.  Every face tells a story – their personality, their life experiences, their soul…

AI relies on existing data.  While the final image may have a certain amount of polish, there is no way that it can fully represent a unique, one-of-a-kind individual.

The Experience

Nothing can replace a portrait experience.  The time you spend laughing and making memories during a session are as valuable as the final image.  Images will evoke memories years down the road of the time you spent together.  You might recall a funny or awkward moment or how special you felt  in the presence of those you love.  The journey of the creation of an image is just as important as the final image.

A Portrait is Art

A machine can create a piece of paper that looks like a painting, but is it an actual painting?  Machines can create dishes, but is that the same as a hand-thrown piece of pottery?

The nuances of what goes through the mind of a photographic artist are intentional – the lighting, posing, props… every decision is completely individual to that artist.

An AI image simply cannot duplicate, with its information and algorithms, what goes through the mind of an artist.

In the end, what it comes down to, is do you want something artificially created or something that matters that is real?
