How to Prepare for Your Outdoor Photo Session

Pick a Meaningful Location

If you choose a location session, a place that feels special to your family makes a session so much more personal.  Do you have memories attached to a park, a beach, or even your home?   Choosing a special location adds personality and meaning to your image.

Think Seasonal

Especially when you are outdoors, dressing appropriately for the season and/or weather will provide for a much more comfortable experience. The level of comfort will show in your portraits.  Consider neutral tones for clothing and avoid patterns.  Solid colored clothing will compliment the busyness of a background.

Considerations

  • Lighting  – Open shade or evening hour works well.  Don’t worry about this aspect too much, though.  I always bring external light sources on location.
  • Crowds – A quiet location works well, especially when photographing young children.
  • Accessibility – Make sure that there is adequate parking, short distancing for walking, and safe for children.
  • Permissions – If you are desiring a particular location that isn’t public, it is best to always ask first.

What if it Rains?

If you are limited to the day that everyone is available, I have a studio.  Otherwise, I am happy to shoot in another location.  If you are able to be a bit more flexible with your time, I am also happy to reschedule.
